RETROSPECT: June 22nd – 30th

Highlights for the final third of June (22nd – 30th) include: Sharing The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe with his close friends four months before it was published, being awarded an honorary Doctorate of Divinity and more talk from Screwtape about the “law of Undulation.”

As you may recall, Lewis met frequently with a group of friends called the Inklings. They gathered at a variety of places, but on the 22nd in 1950 it happened to be at the Eagle and Child. When they came together at this location it was unusual for them to actually read any of their works. Nevertheless, this was a special occasion, as Lewis brought the galley proofs of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

In April he gave his first RAF talk, in May his first letter by Screwtape was published, in August he gave his first radio talk on the BBC and was asked to do a second series in September, then in December he gave a special series of lectures that became A Preface to Paradise Lost. But it is during the first part of June, 1941 that some would say was the best thing

C. S. Lewis (Theology) Collection

Most are aware that in addition to Lewis’s landmark books, he wrote a lot of shorter works that were published in a variety of publications. One of those is a journal called Theology. Over a three year span (1939-41) he had ten pieces released there. Last year in honor of the 50th anniversary of his death the editors created a special page online for anyone to access PDF copies of all of those writings. They include four articles, three book reviews and three letters (correspondence). The most famous selection is the essay version of Lewis’s best sermon (and it was only his second), “The Weight of Glory.”
