The Unsuccessful Poet (CSLM-01)

C. S. Lewis, a successful writer in a number of areas, actually dreamed of accomplishing something that in reality became an early failure for him.

When Lewis was only ten he wrote his first poem and for nearly the next twenty years his main ambition was to become a poet. In fact before his 21st birthday his first published worked was a poetry book called Spirits in Bondage. It was released in 1919…about twelve years before he became a Christian.

Dymer was Lewis’ only other poetry book published in his lifetime, seven years later in 1926. He did, however, continue to write short poems throughout his life and some are seen in his other fictional works. After his death several books were released containing his various poetry, a key collection is one simply called “Poems.”
