The Hobbit – Movies vs. the Book, Part 1

In book form The Hobbit has been available for nearly 80 years, but the third and final movie installment was just released late last year. No one suggests the three films are perfect adaptations, but how far off do they really miss the mark? William O’Flaherty is joined by Dr. Charlie Starr, Dr. Crystal Hurd and …

The Heart of Light (Dr. Charlie Starr)

I’m sharing an interview from respected C.S. Lewis scholar Dr. Charlie Starr, but it’s not directly about Lewis. However, Charlie does announce news about upcoming articles related to Lewis towards the end of the show. However, the main focus is on a brand new fictional book that is influenced in part by Lewis and done in the vein of his Science Fiction trilogy. The book is called The Heart of Light: A Tale of Solomon Star and it is the first of what should be many great adventures. This is also different in another way,

C.S. Lewis Blog from HarperCollins

A couple of months ago I featured HarperCollins’s site they manage online at CSLewis.com. One of the areas I mentioned was BLOG section that contains a large variety of articles by either Lewis scholars or enthusiasts. This area use to be a standalone site until late last year and has been posting essays for nearly seven years. While it is easy to navigate the site (you can browse by year, author or topic) I wanted to highlight a few older articles that you might not come across too quickly by those methods:

Charlie Starr’s Lewis Pages

Dr. Charlie W. Starr has published several scholarly and popular articles on C. S. Lewis, especially on Lewis and film. His personal website has a section devoted to Lewis that you will want to check out. A large variety of articles he has written over the years are available in his “Charlie’s Lewis Essays” subsection. Among the articles is a very insightful piece called “C.S. Lewis’s Vision of Heaven” that was first published in CSL: The Bulletin of the New York C.S. Lewis Society. His “Chronicles of Narnia” area includes all the maps on Narnia in one place for easy reference. There are several other subsections in Charlie’s site to explore as well.

Taylor Colloquium 2014 (REPEAT)

The following is a conversation I had with Dr. Pamela Jordan-Long from Taylor University about the 2014 C.S. Lewis Colloquium being held on campus May 29-June 1. She also gives some details about their C.S. Lewis Center which has a wide range of books from him and several other authors. The featured speakers include Dr. Michael Ward and Dr. Bruce Edwards who have been on previous All About Jack shows.

RETROSPECT: February 19th – 29th

Highlights for the final third of February (19th – 29th) include: The beginning of his fourth and final BBC series of talks, a landmark lecture series that would become one of his most insightful works aimed at a mainstream audience, and a new edition of The Screwtape Letters containing a second preface.

The fourth and final BBC radio series kicked off on the 22nd in 1944. The series itself was first called “Beyond Personality” and the first talk was entitled “Making and Begetting.” However, on the 24th the text was reprinted in The Listener and it was called “The Map and the Ocean.” This was the first time Lewis’s broadcasts were made available before being collected in a book.

The two different titles for the fourth series debut provides some hints at what was presented by Lewis. He noted the words “begetting” or “begotten” are not used today, but its

Anniversary Reflections #2

Many are reflecting on the 50th anniversary of C.S. Lewis’s death, but today (11/29) is the 115th anniversary of his birth. The follow interview features three people I’ve had as a guest previously sharing their thoughts on several questions I asked them related to aspects of Lewis’s works they’ve enjoyed and how his material has impacted their life. These guests are Peter Williams, Dr. Charlie Starr and Colin Duriez.
