RETROSPECT: March 1st – 11th

Highlights for the first third of March (1st – 11th) include: First book collecting quotations and shorter passages, how Charles Williams became a friend and a former student previews The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Less than five years after C.S. Lewis died a collection containing brief excerpts from a wide range of his writings came out on the 4th of March in 1968. A Mind Awake: An Anthology of C.S. Lewis would be the first of many books featuring quotations or shorter selections. This debut work was edited by Clyde S. Kilby, the person who began what we know today as The Marion E. Wade Center. The book is arranged into ten major sections and nearly all of those divisions are further divided into sub-themes.

C. S. Lewis (Theology) Collection

Most are aware that in addition to Lewis’s landmark books, he wrote a lot of shorter works that were published in a variety of publications. One of those is a journal called Theology. Over a three year span (1939-41) he had ten pieces released there. Last year in honor of the 50th anniversary of his death the editors created a special page online for anyone to access PDF copies of all of those writings. They include four articles, three book reviews and three letters (correspondence). The most famous selection is the essay version of Lewis’s best sermon (and it was only his second), “The Weight of Glory.”

Debating in Writing (CSLM-35)

C.S. Lewis was no stranger to debate, but did you know he encountered it at times when his essays were published?

In 1940 Lewis wrote an article entitled “Christianity and Culture” that was published in the March issue of the journal Theology. Two months later S.L. Bethell and E.F. Carritt responded to what he said.

Then in June Lewis replied back, which lead to George Every joining in the discussion three month later. It all ended when Lewis closed out the year with his final reply in December.
