If Screwtape wrote a “devotion,” what would it be like? Here’s my attempt to answer that question based on part of an original prayer I say each morning.
I wrote this “Screwtape Devotion” as the result of being asked to do the morning devotion at the 2025 Inklings Fellowship retreat, an annual event in Montreat, NC at Montreat College hosted by Drs. Hal Poe and Don King.
Here’s the part of the prayer I shared:
“As I begin this day, I pause and remind myself that you are the Creator of everything.”
“This means You are all-powerful and all-knowing, and I’m not…and that’s okay.”
“I also pause and remind myself that You are all loving and perfectly holy, and I am not, but these attributes are ones that I should aim to be more like.”
“I thank You because of Your grace and mercy that You loved me so much that You sacrificed Your only Son, Jesus, that I might have a restored relationship with You.”
“Because of Your love, I can put my hope and trust in You.”
“I thank You that when I don’t know what to do, I can ask You for wisdom, as well as strength to do what You guide me to do.”
“Finally, thank you, Lord, that your love is so unchanging that there is nothing I can do to make you love me more, and there is nothing I can do to make you love me less, AMEN.”
