In this first of a two-part interview, Holly tells William O’Flaherty about why such a “narrow” focus is justified, what is especially important to know about the first twenty years of Tolkien’s life and the forty year span BEFORE The Lord of the Rings was published. Additionally, Holly explains why the book is arranged into three major sections and why she provides explanations about Catholicism.
