Mere Christianity History, Part 2 (CSLM-12)

LISTEN TO AUDIO/PODCAST VERSION

Mere Christianity (Alt cover)Last time I gave you some background information about how Mere Christianity began as radio broadcasts and next became a series of three books. Would you believe there is a backstory to this backstory?

C.S. Lewis never wanted to be on the radio before he was asked to do a short series that grew into the book known as Mere Christianity. He was already busy with a growing writing career in addition to his responsibilities as an Oxford professor.

It all got started because the Director of Religious Broadcasting at the BBC, James Welch, had personally enjoyed reading Lewis’s The Problem of Pain. Now stop and think about this, he had READ the book, but he was asking Lewis to be on the radio and had never heard him speak. Fortunately, Lewis had a great speaking voice and the rest is history.
