While C.S. Lewis is known primarily for The Chronicle of Narnia books, his first really big “claim to fame” came from another series…one that he didn’t particularly like himself.
By the time The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe came out in 1950, Lewis was already successful on several levels. In academic circles he was known for his literary criticism and his writings on Christian topics were very popular among the masses.
But it was a series of 31 letters that established his reputation. The Screwtape Letters debuted as a book in early 1942 and was so successful that it had to be reprinted eight times before the end of the year. Yet, Lewis didn’t enjoy writing them mainly because it forced him to think “what would the devil do!”
